Netflix’s hit series Cobra Kai will end with its sixth season, showrunners announced

One of Netflix‘s most successful series, consistently lasting weeks in the Top 10 most-watched worldwide every time it premieres a season, is Cobra Kai, the Karate Kid spin-off that has captivated audiences since it first appeared in May 2018 on YouTube Red.

Created by Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, Cobra Kai was acquired and produced by Netflix starting with its third season, and it has taken over production of it ever since, giving it a phenomenal boost and turning it into a phenomenon with a much wider reach.

It will come to an end with season six

In a joint announcement between Netflix and the creators of the series, it was officially announced that it will have a sixth season, with which the series will conclude. In addition to a brief signed by the three creators, Netflix released a teaser trailer with scenes from the previous five seasons and noting that the sixth season will be the final one.

The trailer only mentions that its premiere will be soon, but without giving a specific date. According to the site The Hollywood Reporter, it will be towards the end of this year. Netflix’s decision to end with season six will allow Heald, Hurwitz and Schlossberg to finish it as they intended.

“Reuniting the world with the Karate Kid universe has been our humbling honor,” the trio said in a statement. “Making Cobra Kai has allowed us to join the same hallowed dojo once inhabited by the great Robert Mark Kamen, John Avildsen, Jerry Weintraub and all of the incredible original cast members. It has also allowed us to play sensei, expanding on the original plots and birthing a new generation of underdogs. We have never taken this opportunity for granted.

“Our goal from day one with Cobra Kai has always been to finish it on our terms, leaving the Valley in the time and place we’ve always envisioned. So it is with immense pride and gratitude that we can announce this achievement. The upcoming sixth season will mark the conclusion of Cobra Kai.”

One of the most successful in Netflix history

The great success of Cobra Kai lies in the fact that it revisits the original characters and actors from the Karate Kid movies and shows them in the current era, along with a young cast with whom the stories have blended seamlessly to make it a phenomenon.

Cobra Kai has placed both in the company’s internal top 10 and on the Nielsen streaming charts when new seasons are released. Season five premiered in September and spent six weeks in the Nielsen top 10.
