In six games as the starting quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, Brock Purdy has become the talk of the NFL for the level of play he has shown, and has quickly turned his infamous ‘title’ of Mr. Irrelevant into a story that, if he continues to have success, could make him a star in his rookie year.
One report notes that Purdy will remain the starter for the remainder of the Playoffs, even if Jimmy Garoppolo is ready to play. Jimmy G led the Niners to five straight wins before getting injured and giving his place to Purdy, but Purdy’s level of play has led him to own the job.
If he returns, Jimmy G will be his backup
The decision to keep Purdy as QB for the remainder of the Playoffs indicates that Jimmy G, who will become a free agent at the end of the season, will be his backup should he be ready to play.
With Purdy at the helm, the Niners became the NFL’s best offense, averaging 33.6 points per game, while Purdy has had a QBR of 119, the second-best in a player’s first five starts since 1950, behind only Kurt Warner’s 131.4.
Purdy made his Playoff debut in an emphatic 49ers win over the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC Wild Card round. He became the first rookie in NFL history with multiple passing touchdowns and a rushing touchdown in his first playoff game.
Similarly, he became the fourth 49ers quarterback with three or more passing touchdowns and a rushing touchdown in a playoff game, which was accomplished at the time by Joe Montana (1984), Jeff Garcia (2002) and Alex Smith (2011).
LeBron James praises him on social media
During the game, Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James posted a tweet praising the performance of Purdy, who is a fan. “Purdy got game!!!!” posted James at the performance of the rookie, who completed 18 of 30 passes, for 332 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions.
He also caught a rushing TD, which helped him make history as the first rookie QB in the Super Bowl era to throw and run for a touchdown in his first playoff game.
Purdy smiled when told that James praised him, and he hopes that smile continues for three more games.
