Chelsea boss Graham Potter now has a major problem to deal with in Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Gabriel Agbonlahor has claimed.
What’s the word?
The striker joined in the summer from Barcelona but has been a disaster, scoring just once in nine Premier League outings.
The 33-year-old was substituted on and off in Chelsea’s Premier League loss to Manchester City, before being left out of the squad completely in their following Carabao Cup defeat to the same opponents.
He has been linked with a shock return to Barcelona in January, and an exit may be the best solution given his dire form.
Speaking on TalkSport, Agbonlahor claimed the Chelsea boss now has a problem with Aubameyang following his decision to leave him out of the team, as well as the fact that the forward does not suit Chelsea’s side.
Will Chelsea get top-four this season?
He said: “Graham Potter’s got different problems now, at a big club like Chelsea.
“He’s got the Aubameyang problem. He wasn’t in the squad for the last game against Manchester City.
“He’s got a problem now of a player who doesn’t want to be there, he’s annoyed at [him] for subbing a sub. He brought him on and [he] subbed him off.
“He’s thinking to himself, ‘this is a different problem I didn’t have at Brighton; I didn’t have no superstars.’ How does he manage that part of being at a big club?”
A headache for Potter
Aubameyang left the Premier League less than a year ago after being stripped of the Arsenal captaincy and frozen out of the squad by Mikel Arteta for his attitude, while he has previous in giving his managers a headache.
Potter is already under pressure after a dismal run of form in his early Chelsea tenure, and a big personality like Aubameyang playing poorly is hardly ideal.
However, even if Chelsea wanted to let Aubameyang leave in this window, as per FIFA rulings, he is only able to play for Barcelona, and it remains to be seen whether a deal can be done.
This is Potter’s first experience at a club as big as Chelsea, and the Aubameyang problem is one he will not have encountered before, so his handling of the situation will certainly be interesting to keep an eye on.
