Saul Canelo Alvarez is doing well while recovering from left hand surgery that was expected to keep him out for the year.
However, the boxer from Guadalajara is making steady progress and is targeting a return to the ring in May.
“The truth right now is that my goal is to return in May,” Alvarez said during a visit to Mexico City. “I’m going to start punching in January to see how I feel and then we’ll see.”
Why didn’t Bivol agree to fight Canelo in May?
This is because Dmitry Bivol, WBA light heavyweight champion, plans on taking a break and won’t fight again until September, while Canelo will prepare for his traditional celebratory fight on May 5.
The Russian is coming off two tough fights, first against Canelo and then against Gilberto Ramirez. Although came out on top in both encounters, he’s fatigued from the preparations and would prefer to to take a break.
Not to mention Bivol has said that he isn’t interested in the 168 lbs. title held by the Mexican. He wants to sweep the 175 lbs. weight class, so he will look to face Artur Beterbiev, who owns the IBF, WBO and WBC titles.
Canelo wants to return in May
Since Alvarez‘s rehab is going well, he hopes to be back in the ring in May.
He still has no opponent, although he’s said that he will look to fight someone that isn’t too challenging, as he wants to test his left wrist before taking on Bivol again.
