accused of racism by Vinicius, the Chiringuito show explains and apologizes

In recent days, Brazilian Vinicius has been at the center of a controversy over his way of celebrating goals. Before the meeting between Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid (2-1 victory for Real), this Sunday, the presenter of the program Chiringuitos spoke about the controversy, while remarks perceived as racist were heard on his show.

Vinicius Jr Real Madrid

A Spanish players’ agent, Pedro Bravo, asked Vinicius Jr, on the Spanish show The Chiringuitoto stop “do the monkey” when the Brazilian scored a goal, while Vinicius Jr shows his joy by dancing. Josep Pedrerol, the host of the show, therefore took the floor, explaining the meaning in Spain of the terms used: “In Spain, this colloquial expression means: ‘don’t play dumb’. Pedro Bravo asked for forgiveness and I ask for it too. If that bothered you, I apologize again. If you’re also black and this bothered you, I apologize again. And if you’re white and you think the expression was unfortunate, I apologize. It may be an unfortunate and inappropriate expression, but it is not racist.”

The presenter then complained about the “vultures” and “social media geeks” who fueled the affair, according to him, and claimed that Europe and Spain were not racist, before apologizing, once again, to Vinicius Jr.

Vinicius Jr and Rodrygo danced

To respond to this controversy, Vinicius Jr celebrated as usual the first goal of his team, scored by Rodrygo. The two Brazilians danced near the corner post after the 21-year-old winger opened the scoring. Real Madrid finally won 2-1, away, thanks to a second goal scored by Uruguayan Federico Valverde.

Note that on the sidelines of the meeting between the two teams, Vinicius Jr was targeted by racist cries from Atlético Madrid fans.
