Jimmy Garoppolo is once again the starting quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers following a season-ending injury to Trey Lance during Sunday’s win over the Seattle Seahawks.
Michael Silver of the San Francisco Chronicle reported that “several players and coaches” admitted after the game that the team is now better with Garoppolo at quarterback.
Even though Lance’s broken ankle is not the way anybody wanted Jimmy G to regain his starting job, there are those within the organization who now believe the Niners are Super Bowl contenders again.
“This is the part no one wants to say publicly, but something several players and coaches enunciated privately in the wake of Sunday’s game — the 49ers are a better team right now with Garoppolo at quarterback than they were with Lance,” Silver wrote.
Silver also wrote that two sources told him, “I can’t say it, but you can.”
Jimmy Garoppolo was ecstatic
The team did look much better with Garoppolo back at the helm, steering his team to victory with 154 yards and a touchdown pass on 13-for-21 completions.
Last weekend, during the Niners loss to the Chicago Bears, Lance threw for 164 yards on 13-for-28 completed passes, no touchdowns and one interception.
It’s unfortunate that Lance is out for the season, but that’s football, and nobody is more ecstatic than Jimmy G.
He signed autographs after the postgame press conference, something David Lombardi of The Athletic said he had never seen a Niners players do before.
