Paris Saint Germain was one of the destinations Ousmane Dembele considered when he looked set to leave Barcelona, but the French forward ended up extending his contract with the Catalan giants.
Now, Paris Saint Germain have explained the reasons that led them not to sign the winger as advisor Luis Campos, speaking to RMC Sport, explained why the interest did not materialise.
“I like Ousmane Demele a lot. He’s a very good player, but we didn’t sign him because he plays on the wing and we play without a winger,” he said.
“When you build a team, you have to make sure everything fits together like a jigsaw puzzle.”
Xavi’s insistence on the Frenchman was, on the other hand, decisive for his continuity in Barcelona.
The player, moreover, always maintained his desire to remain at Barcelona and turned a deaf ear to other proposals, among which was PSG.
The international, who finally signed on for Barcelona until 2024, has played in eight matches this season: six in LaLiga and two in the Champions League.
He has scored two goals and provided four assists and the winger, who became a father this weekend, has started the season in fine form.
“He is happy, enjoying, content. He is important for me, for the group… he makes a difference, he assists, he scores, he is a killer and he is in a good moment,” Xavi reflected.
“I don’t want to get carried away, but the ability he has in one-on-one situations is on a par with the best Neymar.
“He has to dare more to shoot at goal and score. He’s a good kid and he has to take advantage of these characteristics.
“He’s there to make a difference and he’s doing that.”
The Sun has reported that Barcelona are considering a move for 31-year-old midfielder Jorginho, whose contract with Chelsea expires in 2023.
According to the English outlet, the Brazilian-born Italian international is being considered by the club as a replacement for Sergio Busquets, whose contract expires next summer.
