John Leguizamo made his dislike of the new James Franco movie public, even calling for a boycott due to the lack of Latino representation.
Alina of Cuba is about Castro’s daughter
James Franco is said to interpret the Cuban leader of the revolution turned dictator Fidel Castro in the upcoming Alina of Cuba.
He is a champion of Latinx culture
Leguizamo has been a cultivator of Latinx culture, being proud of the Latin American heritage, he even has a Netflix special bluntly called “John Leguizamo’s Latin History for Morons” where he schools the viewer on the aforementioned subject from a teacher’s perspective.
And naturally, after being a strong supporter of Latinx rights and identity he considered this an offense to the culture and he publically shared his discontent on Instagram.
He accuses Hollywood of stealing the narrative
“How is this still going on? How is Hollywood excluding us but stealing our narratives as well? No more appropriation Hollywood and streamers! Boycott! This F’d up! Plus seriously difficult story to tell without aggrandizement which would b wrong!”
He continued “I don’t got a prob with Franco but he ain’t Latino!”
After his publication went viral and is now reaching the 20,000-like mark, and even got the attention of The View’s Ana Navarro, who also supported his motion to boycott the film.
“I’d like to think no Latino actor worth their salt would sign up to play and aggrandize a murderous dictator who terrorized the people of Cuba for six decades,” Ana Navarro commented. “For both reasons you articulated, I join you in the boycott.”
It will start filming in August
The movie will start shooting in mid-august in Colombia, specifically in Cartagena, where its colonial landscape represents a mid-century Cuba before the revolution that started in 1953 and finally concluded on January 1st, 1956 with Castro taking over Batista’s Cuba and implanted a communist regime.
