Everton closing in on Gueye signing

Everton have been linked with a move to bring Idrissa Gana Gueye back to Goodison Park this summer, and now a new update has emerged from a reliable source.

What’s the latest?

Italian journalist and transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has given an update on Everton’s pursuit of Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Idrissa Gana Gueye.

Romano tweeted:

“Everton are closing on Gana Gueye deal with Paris Saint-Germain. Final details will be discussed this week, clubs now negotiating permanent deal.”

“Lampard wants Gana Gueye, now optimistic after talks opened last Thursday.”

Lampard will be delighted

With Romano revealing that Lampard openly wants the player, he will surely be delighted that the powers at Goodison Park are finally putting the wheels into motion to sign players and improve the squad ahead of the new season, with Everton returning to action in the Premier League this week.

Last week the Toffees had two more new additions in the team as Dwight McNeil and Ruben Vinagre joined the Merseyside club alongside James Tarkowski and now Gueye could be the fourth player to be confirmed.

Firstly, where did Everton finish in the Premier League?

Since leaving Everton back in 2019, Gueye has been a reliable and consistent performer in the PSG midfield, and last season proved that he could be a valuable asset at Goodison Park if he did re-join the side this summer.

Over 26 Ligue One appearances, the 32-year-old scored three goals, delivered one assist and created three big chances, making 2.3 tackles and winning four duels per games, as well as successfully completing the majority of his dribbles (71%).

Gueye also had the fourth best pass completion rate in the final third over the entire top five European leagues last season (89%) and ranked 10th for conversion of big chances in Ligue One, with his impact from the centre of the pitch contributing to PSG’s league title win.

Former manager Mauricio Pochettino lavished praise on the midfielder for his performances, hailing Gueye “important” in the team:

“He [Gueye] is an important player in the balance he gives the team, he also scores goals now.”

With that being said, the signing of the midfielder would no doubt delight the club’s manager in their pursuit to compete more comfortably in the Premier League this term.
