Presented to the press on Monday after officially committing to FC Barcelona on Friday, Jules Koundé (23) notably confirmed that he had indeed refused to sign at Chelsea.

The French international ended one of the soap operas of the summer by joining the Catalan club after three seasons at Sevilla FC. The former Bordelais, who signed a lease until June 2027 with FC Barcelona, explained why he preferred to join the blaugrana club rather than the Blues. “It’s true that Chelsea wanted me but I waited for the club to have an agreement with Sevilla. I had chosen Barça from the start (…) I had a very good first impression due to the affection I received from everyone, also from the president. I really want to join the team to fight to get to the top”underlined Koundé before evoking the competition. “It’s a good thing, the tenure is decided by the coach. I come to grow and help do whatever Xavi and my teammates ask of me. I want to fight. For me it is a challenge”, he continued. One thing is certain, this signing confirms the high ambitions of the Catalans during this summer transfer window.

Barca salute Koundé’s patience

During the same presentation, the Spanish club’s director of football Mateu Alemany confirmed the player’s determination to join the Blaugrana project. “Jules’ agent called me every day or two for two months to find out the fair play situation, because he had very strong offers. I told him ‘go ahead, sign’, but the player wanted to come to Barça and waited for us. His insistence was enormous. At one point, I even told him not to call me again, because I didn’t know what to say to him”, explained the leader of Barça. The French international could take his first steps at Camp Nou during the Gamper Trophy against Pumas.
