He went to Munich as Sadio Mane‘s driver, but now he has a contract with the reserve team, Benin international Desire Segbe Azankpo is once again part of the same club as his old friend.
Mane and Segbe Azankpo go back to their days at Generation Foot in Senegal, from where they both went to Metz in France.
However, while Mane impressed in the first team and went on to play for Red Bull Salzburg, Southampton and Liverpool, Segbe Azankpo ended up in the reserve team and began a more nomadic journey through less prestigious leagues.
That journey took him to the lower divisions of France and England, as well as spells in Slovakia, Romania and Luxembourg.
Now, 10 years after Mane left Metz, Segbe Azankpo has joined him at Bayern.
The striker has played seven games for the Beninese national team and was part of their squad for the 2019 African Cup of Nations.
He played against Mane in qualifying for the 2023 edition of the tournament.
Segbe Azankpo‘s last club was Dunkerque in the French third tier, but he was let go in June.
While without a club, he has been driving Mane to training sessions in Germany, before earning a deal with the B team, Bayern Munich II, who are coached by Martin Demichelis.
