Leeds: Orta in Greenwood contract talks

Leeds United are in ongoing negotiations with Sam Greenwood over the signing of a new contract at Elland Road.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to Phil Hay’s latest report for The Athletic, in which the journalist revealed that, alongside both Joe Gelhardt and Crysencio Summerville, Victor Orta is hoping to finalise a new deal for the 20-year-old centre-forward in the coming week.

In his piece, Hay wrote: “All three [Gelhardt, Summerville and Greenwood] are also involved in negotiations over new contracts and Leeds plan to begin finalising those proceedings this week, making sure they are protected by longer deals. Gelhardt has two years on his existing contract while Greenwood and Summerville are into their final years, tied down only until next summer.”

Supporters will be buzzing

Considering just how exciting a prospect Greenwood undoubtedly is, Hay’s update revealing that Orta is hoping to tie the forward down to a new long-term deal in the next few days is sure to have left the Elland Road faithful buzzing – especially considering the youngster’s current contract is set to expire next June.

Indeed, following his £1.5m move from Arsenal back in the summer of 2020, the £2.25m-rated talent made an instant impact for the Whites’ U23 side, scoring 12 goals over 18 Premier League 2 appearances in his debut campaign with Mark Jackson’s side.

The £10k-per-week striker followed these returns up with yet another impressive haul of eight goals and five assists over 17 Premier League 2 fixtures last season – form which saw the 20-year-old earn a regular spot in Jesse Marsch’s matchday squads over the Premier League run in.

However, not only did Greenwood simply help to make up the American’s numbers, he played an active part in the Whites avoiding the drop to the Championship, registering two assists – in the 3-2 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers and the 3-0 win over Watford – over his seven Premier League appearances last time out.

As such, considering his tender age, it is evident that the player coaches at Leeds have dubbed “phenomenal” has an extremely bright future in the professional game – leading us to believe that Hay’s latest update suggesting that this future will be at Elland Road is sure to delight everyone involved with the Whites.
