Elon Musk reacts to Brittney Griner swap deal: Maybe free people in jail for weed here too?

Elon Musk took to Twitter on Sunday to discuss the reported prisoner swap offer made by the US government to Russia in their bid to convince the country to release Brittney Griner.

The WNBA star was arrested back in February on Russian soil after customs officials allegedly found vape cartridges containing hashish oil in her luggage.

To secure her return to the USA, there could be a swap of the Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout – who is currently serving time in the USA and who is also known as the ‘Merchant of Death’ – for Griner and also former US Marine Paul Whelam.

Reacting to this, Musk shared a meme on the social media platform.

“People in the US in jail for weed while the government trades a Russian war criminal to free a woman’s basketball player in jail for weed,” the meme stated.

Musk went one step further and made a call for the US government to release domestic prisoners who are doing time for marijuana offences.

“Maybe free some people in jail for weed here too?” Musk wrote in his tweet.

The Tesla CEO has been critical of the US justice’s persecution of marijuana-related crimes again in the past.

“Selling weed literally went from major felony to essential business (open during pandemic) in much of America and yet many are still in prison, doesn’t make sense, isn’t right,” he tweeted in 2020.

However, in another interview for The New York Times, Musk stressed that he believes weed affects people’s productivity.

“There’s a reason for the word ‘stoned,'” he said.

“You just sit there like a stone on weed.”

Back in 2018, the famous billionaire was spotted smoking marijuana during an interview for The Joe Rogan Experience podcast.

He was widely criticised for that appearance, given the damage it did to Tesla’s reputation and even stock price.
