Best Bill Russell moments: Flipping off Charles Barkley, telling Shaq he’ll kick his a–

Bill Russell, an 11-time NBA champion with the Boston Celtics, was also known for his civil rights activism and for always brightening up the room with his laugh.

Russell, 88, had a great sense of humor to go along with his words of wisdom and besides his work in the Black community, some of his best off-the-court moments came when he was having fun.

One of the most-remembered moments of Russell was when he flipped off Charles Barkley at the 2018 NBA Awards.

Barkley was presenting the Lifetime Achievement Award to Oscar Robertson but he took the time to acknowledge all of the NBA legends in attendance.

When Barkley thanked Russell, the Celtics legend flipped him off on live television, later apologizing and jokingly saying he can’t help but show the bird to Charles.

Bill Russell tells Shaq he’ll kick his a–

One year prior to Russell flipping off Barkley, he went viral at the 2017 NBA Awards for telling other Hall of Fame centers that he would kick their a–, including the most-dominant big man to have ever lived Shaquille O’Neal.

When presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award, Russell pointed at Shaq, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Dikembe Mutombo, Alonzo Mourning and David Robinson before telling them he would have kicked their ass.

Russell was known for his stellar defense but it’s hard to imagine him stopping a prime Shaq.

Shaq has always respected those big men who came before him, including Russell.

Bill Russell with Kobe Bryant

Another great Russell moment was with Shaq’s former teammate, the late, great Kobe Bryant.

During the 2008 NBA All-Star Game, Russell told Bryant that he watches basketball by trying to decipher what each player’s agenda is and see how well he’s carrying it out.

Bryant told Russell that he does the same and that it’s because he read his book.

The NBA legend then goes on to tell Bryant that he couldn’t be more proud of him if he were his own son.
