Irving’s enigmatic message: F*** what they think

Kyrie Irving is making headlines in the NBA off-season about his future.

After the Brooklyn Nets were eliminated by the Boston Celtics in the first round of the playoffs, his departure has seemed certain.

Then came a report from the New York Post stressing that the point guard could pick up his 36.9 million dollar player option for next season.

However, all recent reports suggest that Irving is looking for a way out. The Athletic analyst Shams Charania tweeted that a Brooklyn departure was a possibility.

Meanwhile, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski said that Los Angeles Lakers were the only team that had shown real interest in acquiring his services.

Irving ‘leaks’ list of alleged suitors

Kyrie Irving allegedly leaked a list of teams he would want to join should he leave the Nets.

The list consists of Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, New York Knicks, Miami Heat, Dallas Mavericks and Philadelphia 76ers, in that order.

It won’t be known until Wednesday whether he will pick up his 36.9m player option. Amidst rumours about his future, Irving took to Twitter to send a mysterious message.

“Are you awake?” Irving wrote “You see everything that’s happening right?

“F*** what they think. It’s legendary to be different.”

Always against the tide

Irving has shown throughout his career that he is someone who tends to go against the tide, at times becoming uncompromising about his beliefs.

This is what led him to refuse to be vaccinated despite mounting pressure from all sides, including his team. He believed he was standing up for the people by taking this stance.

He also once referred to himself as a martyr, something that offended many.

That is precisely the risk that any team trying to sign him will have to assume, as they would be getting a superb player, but at the same time a ticking time bomb that can be triggered at any moment for a variety of reasons.

What seems clear is that he is not going to change. Will anyone take the risk? LeBron JamesLakers seem willing to do so, but a move is far from simple.
