British Olympics star Kelly Holmes has come out as gay, and spoke of her relief after finally going public about her sexuality that she had been keeping secret.
The 34-year-old mentioned that she felt fear about revealing who she really was but is now relieved to have told the world.
“There have been lots of dark times where I wished I could scream that I am gay – but I couldn’t,” she told the Mirror in an exclusive interview.
“I needed to do this now, for me. It was my decision. I’m nervous about saying it. I feel like I’m going to explode with excitement.
“Sometimes I cry with relief. The moment this comes out, I’m essentially getting rid of that fear.”
Kelly admitted that her close family and friends had long known about her homosexuality and that, despite being currently in a relationship, was not willing to share details
“It’s the first time I’ve had someone who I don’t introduce as a PA or friend,” she said.
“No disrespect to them [previous partners], but the relationships have only been a small part of my life.
“They haven’t been in this fearful world with me for 34 years.”
