Hugo Snchez to MARCA: Mbapp did not say no to Real Madrid

In an exclusive chat with Arturo Palafox and Dan Fridman of MARCA, Hugo Snchez, Real Madrid idol in the 80s, did not hesitate to address the controversial failed signing of Frenchman Kylian Mbapp, who decided to renew for PSG and reject the million-dollar offer to become the new player of the Spanish capital team.

Question: What must go through a player’s head to say no to Real Madrid? Do you think Mbappe was not mentally ready to face the challenge of wearing that jersey?

Interview with Hugo Snchez: Why did Kylian Mbapp say no to Real Madrid?

Answer: It’s very difficult to answer you, because I’m not in his head, in his brain, nor am I him. But if I sense that he didn’t say no to Real Madrid, but he told Real Madrid to wait for me a little bit.

Because he has so many pressures, so many external situations, and maybe even family members have pressured him and influenced his decision to (not) choose Real Madrid, but later on, it was his wish, it was his illusion, it was his dream, but that dream, as he said, well, the dream can wait a little while.

I think he is showing signs that he wants to go to Real Madrid, but now, because of political issues, social issues, economic issues I don’t think they are, because he was going to earn a lot of money at Real Madrid, as he is going to earn a lot of money at PSG, so it is not because of money, but rather, he has not said no to Real Madrid, rather he said, I cannot betray other types of situations that are stronger than money. You have to understand that.

Hugo Sanchez vs. Karim Benzema: a timeless comparison

Question: Considering the times in which you played and adapting to today, do you consider yourself a better striker than Karim Benzema?

Hugo Snchez vs. Karim Benzema: Can you really tell who is better?

Answer: It is very difficult, these are answers that you must answer first and not me, because I am very respectful in terms of eras and times.

What I am sure is that players like Pel and Beckenbauer, who are older than me, would succeed in today’s soccer, and so would all the great players who have been participating in this wonderful sport that is soccer. I feel that because of the physical conditions and the training and preparation that we have today, we can say that people nowadays, like Cristiano Ronaldo or Messi, if they had been born in the 50’s and so many years in the time of Pel, Beckenbauer, in our time, would be shining exactly the same way.

The great talents and the great footballers, the successful people, I believe that they would succeed in any period of life.

We have to enjoy each one’s moment and time and be thankful that they have given us that reference for those of us who have followed them.

On my side, my reference was Pel, apart from other Mexican players who were playing professionally when I was a kid.

Question: Would you say that talents are timeless?

Answer: Yes, I think so, something that I have learned within the many values that my father, my mother, family and friends gave me is respect, I believe that as long as we continue to live with that respect in all generations, it will be more beautiful and give each one the place they deserve because of the times each one lived through.
