Mancini: ‘Italy objective is to rediscover EURO mentality’

Roberto Mancini explains Italy’s target for this new era is to ‘rediscover the mentality’ of the side that won EURO 2020, with different characteristics as they visit Germany in the Nations League tonight.

It kicks off in Monchengladbach at 19.45 UK time (18.45 GMT).

The Azzurri are unbeaten and top of the group so far in the Nations League after draws with Germany and England, around a 2-1 victory over Hungary.

“I think our objective must be to create a team that plays well, to recover the type of side that won the Euros,” Mancini told RAI Sport.

“Perhaps the players have different characteristics, so would be more vertical in the passing, but the mentality of attacking and pressing whether at home or away, that is what we need back.”

The CT has given many new faces their debuts in the last three games, even those who have never even played in Serie A like Willy Gnonto, Federico Gatti and Alessio Zerbin.

He was able to see them in action thanks to the ‘stage’ at the Coverciano ground, so more of these training camps could be allowed by clubs during the season.

“I don’t think it’ll resolve al the problem, but it can be very useful. It’s important that all the elements of the football world work together in the same direction.”

Having failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Mancini is enacting a generational shift ahead of the European Championship qualifiers.
