Ten months of work and a handshake: How Tchouameni was signed

On Saturday morning Monaco and Real Madrid made the transfer of Aurelien Tchouameni official.

The French international has signed for Real Madrid for the next six seasons, concluding negotiations that began back in September and which over the last few months have been a genuine whirlwind of emotions, uncertainties and unexpected developments.

On this occasion, a handshake has been honoured, the one that Real Madrid made to the midfielder a few days after Kylian Mbappe abandoned the club.

Tchouameni, without fuss and without a single show, decided that what was best for him was to sign for Real Madrid, turning his back on the many millions that PSG were offering him.

This commitment comes after many months of talks, meetings, matches watched live, and on videos, but above all after a lot of groundwork done by Real Madrid and that, as happened with Camavinga, has been crucial for him to become a Real Madrid player in the end.

Real Madrid, or rather their sporting management, had it clear since January that Tchouameni was the ideal player to finish off their midfield.

After the first approaches, they verified that the player corresponded to the profile of a footballer that the club has been looking for in recent times, that is to say, committed, professional and with a great future ahead of him due to the quality of football he showed in every game.

Transfer put on hold

After Juni Calafat‘s trip to Monaco in April, everything seemed very clear and the future of the midfielder looked to be in white.

However, Real Madrid‘s directors decided that everything would be put on hold until Mbappe‘s final decision was made.

The order was clear, the money was for the striker. The player knew of that decision, a gesture that speaks volumes for Real Madrid’s sporting department.

Los Blancos’ request was to wait a year, but Tchouameni wanted to leave the French league, while Monaco also needed money.

Faced with this situation, the French international listened to Liverpool‘s offer and Klopp’s insistence made him hesitate.

In the dressing room he confessed that his style of play would be well suited to the Premier League and that with Kroos, Casemiro and Modric ahead of him, it would be very difficult for him to be a starter in Madrid.

It was all an attempt to reassure himself in the face of Madrid’s withdrawal. In fact, Real Madrid thought he was a goner at the time.

Sudden change

The scenario changed suddenly, and in the same week that Mbappe announced his renewal with Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid resumed negotiations with Tchouameni.

A trip to Monaco, a handshake and what had been discussed earlier was restored to full effect.

Everything seemed very simple, although Real Madrid did not reach the demand made by the team from the principality, although it was all part of negotiations.

Until then, no one from Real Madrid had officially approached Monaco and they did not do so because, as we said, the priority was another player.

The scenario changed and negotiations began and were completed on Saturday morning.

What the leaders of the Madrid club did not count on was the interference of PSG and Kylian Mbappe.

Once again those from Qatar they decided to destroy the market and make an out-of-control push to a player, who stoically resisted the barrage of millions and the pressures received from Paris.

Last Tuesday the agreement seemed definitive and in fact the contracts began to be drawn up, but as happened with Mbappe, until the signature appeared on the papers, no one in Valdebebas dared to claim victory.

Real Madrid are taking a player that everyone is raving about, who they say is going to dominate the midfield position in the coming years, and they are doing it thanks to a handshake.

There are still footballers who value their word.
