Scott Bain signs new Celtic contract

Anthony Joseph has dropped a major update on the future of Celtic goalkeeper Scott Bain.

What’s the talk?

In a recent post on Twitter, the Sky Sports journalist revealed that the 30-year-old shot-stopper has put pen to paper on a new deal with Celtic, which will see the Scotland international remain at Parkhead until at least the summer of 2024.

In his tweet, Joseph said: “Celtic goalkeeper Scott Bain has signed a new contract until the summer of 2024.”

Do you think Bain deserves a new deal?

Fans will be worried

While Bain is undoubtedly a decent option as a backup to the Bhoys’ current number one Joe Hart, the goalkeeper’s continued presence in the first-team squad for the next two-and-a-half years could well block the pathway of some of the Hoops’ up-and-coming prospects in the position – and there are a couple.

Indeed, 23-year-old Conor Hazard has long been touted for a regular place in the Celtic first team, with Neil Lennon stating of the youngster after his impressive performance in the 3-2 Europa League win over Lille last season: “Conor has been knocking on the door, training-wise, for a long time. I told him a couple of weeks ago that I’d get him in for the Lille game. He was excellent. He made a really important save when we were 3-2 up. We’re delighted with the progress he’s making.”

Behind Hazard, there is also 18-year-old Tobi Oluwayemi, who has been making a name for himself in the Celtic B side this season. Indeed, he has featured ahead of Hazard, Bain and Vasilis Barkas on the bench in the Europa League, with the Hoops’ reserve team manager Darren O’Dea clearly being impressed with the progress that the England under-19 international has made.

Concerning Oluwayemi, O’Dea said: “He’s in a really good place at the minute. That’s obviously been reflected with [the] recognition he’s had in the first-team. I’d imagine that recognition will keep coming if he keeps his feet on the ground and keeps working the way he is at the minute.

“I hope he gets to work with Joe Hart because there’s a fantastic example to all the young goalkeepers here of a brilliant professional. Tobi’s chance will come, I’m sure of it. That’s down to Tobi at the minute, but he’s doing very well.”

Question 1. How many managers have Celtic had in 2021?

As such, with two incredibly talented goalkeeping prospects in the pipeline at Lennoxtown, Bain’s position as the Celtic number two for probably the next two-and-a-half seasons could well worry Hoops fans. Should either Hazard or Oluwayemi feel that their opportunities may be limited at Parkhead, they could start to wonder if the grass is greener elsewhere and duly cut ties with their current club.
