Floyd Mayweather Jr has an unblemished record as a professional boxer, never losing a bout, yet one of his former opponents in Canelo Alvarez has been roundly praised by his own uncle, Jeff Mayweather, who has labelled the Mexican as the best fighter in the world.
Mayweather Jr defeated Canelo during the Mexican’s formative years in the sport, however Alvarez is now arguably the best pound-for-pound fighter since the American, and he has used his immense popularity in Mexico to make an awful lot of money.
“I have Canelo in the highest concepts,” Jeff Mayweather told Tha Boxing Voice.
“I think he is the best fighter in the world, I see, now, that Canelo is the best boxer in the world. It’s almost like when Floyd was the best in the world, when you’re the best, I can’t choose another.”
Alvarez is yet to confirm his next fight after Dmitry Bivol, with Oscar de la Hoya wanting the Mexican to fight Jaime Munguia.
Jeff Mayweather even went as far as to suggest that the Mexican has improved defensively.
“In the beginning he wasn’t so good in defense, now he shakes his head,” Jeff Mayweather added.
“You can see that he has worked on a lot of things. He’s not exactly the same as Floyd, but I think he did copy things.”
