Boxing: Lomachenko bursts into tears backstage after controversial loss to Haney

Vasiliy Lomachenko (17-3, 11 KOs) lost to Devin Haney (30-0, 15 KOs) Saturday night at MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas and missed out on the opportunity to snatch the undisputed lightweight title belt away from Haney. The Ukranian boxer burst into tears backstage after a controversial decision.

Lomachenko, 35, is over a decade older than the champion, but still closed out the last three rounds looking much more fresh. The judges, however, ruled a unanimous decision in favor of Haney with two 115-113 scorecards and another at 116-112.

Fans in the arena were shocked to hear the verdict. The American crowd seemed to support the European boxer over the Oakland native, who throughout the weekend had a series of rants that likely made him public enemy number one.

In fact, he was unable to speak in his postgame interview due to fans booing and throwing objects such as beer cups into the ring.

Lomachenko received a roaring ovation from the crowd due to his spectacular performance. After the bout, he thanked God, his team, manager, family, friends and fans for supporting him, but was still unable to hold back tears in the locker room.

Lomachenko not a sore loser

He twice refused to talk about the judges’ decision and only said that the people witnessed what happened.

Haney wants to fight Gervonta Davis or Shakur Stevenson, but a rematch against Lomachenko would surely be a box office success.

The champion has now successfully defended his thronw seven times and remains undefeated.

All three of Lomachenko’s losses have been via tight decisions, so his record doesn’t speak to the world class fighter that he is and will continue to be.
