Prince William said to have received ‘very large sum’ in settlement over phone hacking scandal

It has emerged that heir to the British throne Prince William received a large amount of money in 2020 which was kept quiet by the monarchy.

William landed a sizeable payout as a settlement in his lawsuit against Rupert Murdoch‘s ‘The Sun’ newspaper. The claim related to a phone hacking scandal.

Harry’s lawyer spills the beans

The news about William‘s money has come out thanks to his brother Harry‘s lawyer. Prince Harry is attempting his own lawsuit against Murdoch’s News Group Newspapers.

In the process, Harry‘s lawyer has pointed to the “very large sum” paid to William in 2020 as a reason why this latest claim should not be thrown out for being too late. Harry began proceedings against NGN back in 2019.

“It is important to bear in mind that in responding to this bid by NGN to prevent his claims going to trial, (Harry) has had to make public the details of this secret agreement, as well as the fact that his brother, His Royal Highness Prince William, has recently settled his claim against NGN behind the scenes,” attorney David Sherborne wrote.

“This is used very much by (Harry) as `a shield not a sword’ against NGN’s attack.”

Actor also hoping to sue

Actor Hugh Grant is in a similar position to Prince Harry. Therefore, a favourable ruling for the prince could be a boost to the actor as well.

As for the amount that Prince William received, well, that has not been disclosed. Whether or not this latest report will put pressure on the Royals to reveal that sum remains to be seen.
