Montpellier carried out a big operation by winning against Stade Rennais this Sunday (1-0).
After sounding the revolt against Reims a week ago (3-0), Stade Rennais was to confirm its renewal against Montpellier this Sunday. A meeting which was akin to a real trap against a rather indecisive Hérault formation, capable of anything since the return to control of Michel Der Zakarian. This balance of power was closed and tactical for a long time, but to everyone’s surprise, it was the people of Montpellier who had the last word. The club collected a precious success to move a little away from the red zone.

This result, for Montpellier, is a performance all the more remarkable as the Paillade played a large part of the meeting in numerical inferiority. Upon returning from the locker room, the talented playmaker Téji Savanier left his teammates at 10 following a stroke (55th). A new expulsion in the midfielder’s career, betrayed by his strong character.
Montpellier make the perfect shot
Before and after that, everything Montpellier had offered was pretty consistent. Well organised, Michel Der Zakarian’s men tried to reduce space against a less creative Rennes side than last season. This did not prevent the Rennais from having highlights, and Lecomte, decisive on several occasions (32nd, 35th), has a great responsibility in this result. But it lacked precision and a zest of luck to these Rennais connected to alternating current, like Gouiri, imprecise (44th), and Theate, unlucky after finding the bar (64th).
Still alive, the locals ended up rocking the game with a victorious helmet shot from Mavididi a few minutes from the end (1-0, 84th). Rennes was knocked out, once again. The Breton club stalls again and misses the opportunity to come back up to Lille.
