Fred Couples had a fantastic career as a PGA Tour golfer and recently talked to Orange County Register’s, Randy Youngman and called Phil Mickelson a “nutbag,” over his move to LIV Golf but still admitted he’s one of the best golfers to ever play.
Couples likes Mickelson but considers he got wildly overpaid for his move to LIV Golf, as he thinks he’s old and not at a great level of play.
“If you’re willing to give Phil Mickelson $200 million at age 53 to shoot 74 and 75, God bless you,” Couples expressed.
Fred Couples’ problem with LIV Golf
Fred Couples expressed that he doesn’t have a problem with LIV Golf, rather his problem is when he does what golfers are doing now when they switch to the Saudi-backed golf tour.
The former golfer also referenced the British Open and Players Championship winner, Cam Smith, even though not by name, and his words when he signed with LIV Golf, who said that he now can have birthdays and go to the weddings of his friends.
“I find that comical because my favorite to ever play has five kids, 40 grandkids and he has never missed anything – and that was Jack Nicklaus,” said Couples.
