It all started well though. Eager to take revenge on their executioner in the final of the 2022 edition, Liverpool managed an exceptional start to the match against Real Madrid on Tuesday evening, at Anfield, in the round of 16 first leg of the Champions League. After a quarter of an hour of play, the club from the banks of the Mersey led by two goals signed Darwin Nunez (4th) and Mohamed Salah (14th), the Egyptian striker having taken advantage of a huge error from Thibaut Courteous. But the rest of the evening turned into a fiasco for Jürgen Klopp’s men, knocked down and beaten 5-2.

“The best period we have played”

Invited before the journalists after the meeting, the German coach did not mask his bitterness, without failing to underline the performance of his players during the first act, with a level of play rarely seen this season. “We gave up all five goals. That means we could have done better. But they were all obviously different. At the start of a game and in the situation we find ourselves in, it’s really important to see positive steps. I think the first half was, apart from the two goals conceded, the best we have played since the start of the season.”

The Liverpool manager regrets the way the goals were conceded by his troops. “The first goal, we have to defend better. There are enough players around. No one sets foot. It’s very dense and it’s also a world-class Vinicius moment. But I think it’s obvious that we could defend better. We concede the third goal, which is a horrible goal, and that’s what changed the game (…) We lost the momentum at that moment and we never really got it back. In the first half we could have scored a third goal.”
