Brittney Griner is back, signs a one-year deal to play with the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury

The story of Brittney Griner‘s return to the United States after her long period of incarceration in Russia had a happy ending about three months ago when in a prisoner exchange she returned home, while Joe Biden‘s administration agreed to send Viktor Bout, the notorious “Merchant of Death” back to Moscow.

Now, however, another chapter in the life of one of the best players in U.S. women’s basketball opens as her last WNBA team, the Phoenix Mercury has reached an agreement with her to sign her to a one-season contract.

When was the last time Brittney Griner played in the WNBA?

It is worth remembering that Griner has not been on a WNBA court since the 2021 season, when she was an extremely important player with the Mercury to reach the WNBA Finals, however, it was a sad moment as Phoenix was unable to beat the Chicago Sky who ended up taking the championship in a series they took by 3 games to 1.

On October 17, 2021 Griner played her last game in the WNBA, four months later she lived a hell that almost lasted a year, since in February 2022 she was detained at the Moscow International Airport since they found in her possession hashish oil in the hoopers luggage.

Brittney Griner and her controversial imprisonment in Russia

BG was sentenced to prison shortly thereafter in an issue that was of national interest as the two-time Olympic gold medalist received support from one part of the population demanding her release, while another part disagreed with the U.S. Government negotiating to free her.

After her arrival home, Griner made no secret of her goal to return to the WNBA this season (which starts next May).

“I also want to make one thing very clear, I intend to play basketball for the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury this season,” Griner wrote.
