Eveliina Summanen charged with deceiving officials after Ella Toone red card overturned

Eveliina Summanen has been charged with successful deception of an official following her role in Ella Toone’s sending off during Tottenham’s WSL clash with Manchester United.

Toone was given her marching orders after pushing Summanen on the shoulder and into the turf after a coming together between the pair. Summanen went down clutching her face.

Toone has subsequently won her wrongful dismissal claim and has seen her red card and three-game suspension overturned. She will now be available for United’s fixtures against Durham, Leicester and Chelsea.

“Tottenham Hotspur Women’s Eveliina Summanen has been charged with ‘successful deception of a match official’ following their WSL match against Manchester United Women on Sunday 12 February,” a statement from the FA read.

“It’s alleged that the midfielder committed a clear act of simulation during the 80th minute, which led to an opponent being sent off, and therefore her behaviour amounts to improper conduct.”

Despite Toone’s sending off on Sunday, Manchester United held onto their one-goal lead to secure a 2-1 victory and rise to the top of the WSL table. A Bethany England strike had cancelled out Leah Galton’s opener, before Mollie Bartrip turned into her own net to give United all three points.
