Barcelona: Pique admits he did not congratulate Messi on World Cup win

Gerard Pique has revealed that he has yet to congratulate Lionel Messi for winning the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The former Barcelona center-back added that he didn’t even follow the tournament that took place in November and December.

He decided to hang up his boots just before the World Cup break despite being in Barcelona’s squad for the first stretch of the season.

“After my retirement I wanted to completely disconnect,” Pique told TikToker John Nellis.

“I went on vacation because the last few months as a footballer had been very hard. I didn’t watch any of the World Cup matches and only a part of the final.”

Although he has not congratulated Messi, Pique has praised the Argentine star, whom he labelled as the finest forward over the last decades. He also considers Iker Casillas, Carles Puyol and Cesc Fabregas as the best goalkeeper, defender and midfielder, respectively.

“In recent years, I would choose Messi [as the best forward] for sure,” Pique added.

“And he showed that even at 35 years old he can compete. He is the best player in the world and he showed it in the World Cup.”
